college station in York County, we offer a variety of alternative music and programming that is just not available from any other radio station in our area. We also serve as a training facility for all interested full or part-time York College students to learn the art of radio broadcasting. Our History WVYC (formerly WYCP, WMH and WMSR) was founded in the early seventies by a group of interested York College students and staff, who were willing to share their technical and programming expertise. We began programming on 640 AM from the lower level of the Student Union on November 18, 1972. In 1975 application was made to the FCC for an educational FM license at 88.1 MHz. WVYC signed on the air at 4:00 PM on November 18, 1976 with a live remote broadcast from Wolf Gymnasium, of the inauguration of York College president Dr. Robert V. Iosue. The first song was Don McLean’s, American Pie, played by Dave Davies. The first newscast was read by Mark Wormsbaker at 8 PM. More information can be found on the WVYC tribute page. Initially, from newly constructed studios located on the third floor of the Life Sciences Building, we broadcast from 4:00 PM until midnight. In the fall of 1986 after 2 & 1/2 cramped months in a temporary basement room, we moved into our present facilities on the third floor of the Iosue Student Union Building. WVYC FM began broadcasting mp3 audio streams on the Internet in the fall of 2001. Our first internet stream was at 4 PM on November 18, 2001, exactly 25 years after we first signed on the air. We received reception reports from every continent except Antarctica within the first hour. WVYC FM operates on a frequency of 88.1 FM. The radio station is and has always been fully student-managed. We operate as a division of the Dept of Communications and Writing. The Station Manager since 2013 has been Jeffrey Schiffman. He also teaches Audio & Radio Production at the college after a 35-year professional radio career

sign was changed to WRKG and a pop standards format was installed. The WRKG calls stood for their new slogan, "WoRKinG for you is our business." The station's studios were moved to the Antlers Hotel in downtown Lorain, of which Veard also owned. The station still remained as a daytime station for many years, with overnight service (via just 57 watts) being added as of the fall of 1986. Among the air talent that was on "Golden 13 Radio" at this time included Dick Conrad, John Antus, Donovan "D.K." Kent, Charles LuBear, Dave Rush, Lauren Wreath, John Ryan and sportscaster Jim Allen. Newscasts were handled by Craig Demyan, Joan Lowry, Mike Partin and Terry Burnabell. Ethnic programming on Sundays included "The Polka Express" with Jimmy Bryda and the "Ecos Latinos" Hispanic music show hosted by Miguel Berlingeri. On February 12, 1990, Jon Veard sold WRKG to Victory Radio, Inc. headed by Vernon Baldwin, who was also the owner of WZLE 104.9-FM. (Clear Channel Communications since acquired WZLE in 1999 and changed the music format to Top 40 as "Kiss 104.9.") WRKG's format changed to country gospel during the day with personalities Terry Lee Goffee and Teri Drda, with Hispanic music played in the evening and overnight hours. By the spring of 1997, WRKG entered into a daytime-only simulcast arrangement with WELW in Willoughby, Ohio. WRKG ended up carrying WELW's mixture of ethnic programming and brokered-time talk shows, plus carried the television audio from WOIO-TV's morning, noon and 6 p.m. newscasts. Accordingly, the callsign was first changed to WELL on June 6, 1997 — but eventually switched it again to WDLW that August 1. The WDLW calls previously were used on a Waltham, Massachusetts station during the 1980s.

to federal youth grants, given to University of Waterloo (UW) students. Riding the community media wave in 1973, the students received money from the Canadian government to start a community television station. Their ambitious goal was also expensive, compelling them to find an alternate project as Grand River Cable took over the role of community cablecaster. That was the start of community radio — FM 98.5 CKWR — and the first station of its kind in Canada. The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) gave Wired World Inc. non-profit charitable status, a license to operate a non-commercial, community-oriented station in 1974. The CRTC said, “We applaud Wired World Inc. for their noble ambition. The Commission will follow with interest this experiement in facilitating community expression on radio, and hopes that it may help to develop a more meaningful role for community dialouge in the private broadcasting sector." Operating initially as CKWR 98.7, the little FM station broadcast from a cramped office inside a house at 1342 King St. East in Kitchener. The premises were owned by UW professor Henry Crapo, who also served on the station’s Board of Directors. The primary reasons for broadcasting, as reflected by it's mandate, were: “ to advance education and to expand the scope and integrity of information and artistic expression in Waterloo Region.” Two moves and 34 years later, FM 98.5 CKWR has come a long way since its inception with its fair share of growing pains along the way. Professional in its approach to programming, the community can find something on the station that is of interest to it. A listener can hear everything from Tchaikovsky to talk shows, and from easy listening to Spanish. It’s an eclectic blend with a soft-and-easy format during the day, specialty programs in the evenings and multicultural on weekends. a carrier current AM station. In November of 1983, CJAM became a low power FM station located at 91.5 on the FM dial, and 91.9 FM on Trillium Cable. From 1983 through 1996 CJAM broadcast at 50 watts. CJAM could be heard west and downtown Windsor and metro Detroit; other parts of Windsor, Lasalle, Riverside, and Detroit suburbs were reached to varying degrees of clarity. In 1996 CJAM increased power to 500 watts, allowing us to be heard clearly in most sections of Windsor and surrounding areas. In March of 2009, the CRTC approved the application for CJAM to move to a new frequency at 99.1 FM and granted us “protected status” at our new home. We provide music and information programming not offered by mainstream commercial media in the Windsor/Detroit area. We serve people and groups within the community who are under represented or maligned by mainstream media by allowing a forum to express their views. CJAM is located in the basement of the CAW Student Centre at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario. owned by the Middletown Area School District. WMSS Broadcasts on 91.1MHz, FM, and has an output power of 1350 Watts, more than many college radio stations! We are owned and operated by the Middletown Area School District. Students in the Middle School (grades 7 through 8) may join the Radio Club. At the High School level, radio becomes a credit course that meets outside regular school hours. Our staff directory lists our current student managers and directors. What can you expect to hear when you tune in to WMSS? That is a difficult question to answer. If you tune in during a weekday during the school year, you could hear just about any kind of music from Jimmy Buffet to Jim Morrison and anything and everything in between. In the evenings (after 3), WMSS plays mostly alternative style music. The students on the air get to choose what they want to play during their air shifts. While there are guidelines concerning inappropriate content, the students in the program are free to choose from the large library of music at WMSS, and they supplement what the station has with music from their own CD and tape collections. Mixed in with all of this are various pre-recorded shows and live sports events. On Sundays, WMSS carries a number of local church services, some of them are broadcast live. of that stuff. Both stations consisted of educational programming, news and sports coverage, and tame music. In 1965, things got interesting when WXPN-AM started airing popular music shows, stirring interest among the students. In about three years time, practically the entire programming schedule of XPN was rock. This all happened in Houston Hall. In 1970, operations moved to 3905 Spruce Street, a move not without problems, but we don't need to get into that yet. There's plenty of other more interesting horror stories ahead. Around this time the antenna was moved from the Gates building of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to High Rise South. Things started getting crazy. XPN fell in with the wrong crowd. To make a long story short, there were several instances of 'offensive' material going on-air, including (but not limited to) fake sexual enhancement drug ads, erotic literature, and left-wing conspiracy theories, not to mention the infamous "Vegetable Report," which was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back. The camel, in this case, is the FCC. Unfortunately, XPN's broadcast license happened to be expiring around this time, and the FCC wouldn't renew it. The University wasn't happy either, and the FM station became entirely professionally run by 1980, while the AM station was still student-run. WXPN-AM became WQHS, and things got bad. Really bad. SAC cut funding down by several thousand dollars, leaving WQHS with just enough money to fund one hazy trip to McDonald's every month for food. Meanwhile, XPN did tons of good things for itself with its fancy-shmancy professionals and became 88.5 instead of 88.9, but who cares? WQHS was totally punk rock. With a shoestring budget, the shadow of its former obscenity, and...and...well, little else, WQHS hit the bottom of the barrel. We were like that guy who spent all of his rent and food money on drugs, but accidentally dropped the drugs down the sewer, and was so desperate that he actually jumped down into the sewer and spent three hours searching for the drugs and drinking the sewer water because it might have remnants of his drugs in it. Well, yeah, it sucked, but it happens. After some serious self-examination, WQHS came back, stronger than ever. Sort of. XPN fled east in October of 2004, leaving WQHS with the shell of the 3905 Spruce. It was awful. The rodents...the dust mites... To add insult to injury, the University decided that since XPN was gone, it didn't really want WQHS around there, and that Penn Press was more important. Yeah, cool. So we were homeless for a while, and it wasn't great, but you know what? If you find the right sewer vent, you feel just like you're in a warm home while you're asleep. Until you wake up with some other homeless guy spooning you. We loved him, but we weren't in love with him. So after about a semester of not broadcasting and eating termites three times a day, WQHS found its new home in the Hollenback Center, otherwise known as the "Hollerback Center" at 3000 South Street. Pretty neat, right? We think so. baseball games in the early to mid sixties and later joined the Atlanta Braves network. WSAT also was one of the first stations in North Carolina to carry the UNC football and basketball games. In the original days of the Tar Heels network, Ray Reeve was the play by play announcer and Bill Curry was the color analyst. Later WSAT carried a few Duke football and basketball games with Add Penfield. The personalities of the past include morning show hosts Grady Cole Jr., Oravl Cox, and Russ McIntyre. Russ is well known for his great voice and his community involvement. Bob Mason, " Music with Mason" covered the radio on weeknights 9 till Midnight. Bob took live requests and would dedicate the songs to his faithful listeners. Many listeners still recall listing to many of our past radio personalities.
