At the High School level, radio becomes a credit course that meets outside regular school hours. Our staff directory lists our current student managers and directors. What can you expect to hear when you tune in to WMSS? That is a difficult question to answer. If you tune in during a weekday during the school year, you could hear just about any kind of music from Jimmy Buffet to Jim Morrison and anything and everything in between. In the evenings (after 3), WMSS plays mostly alternative style music. The students on the air get to choose what they want to play during their air shifts. While there are guidelines concerning inappropriate content, the students in the program are free to choose from the large library of music at WMSS, and they supplement what the station has with music from their own CD and tape collections. Mixed in with all of this are various pre-recorded shows and live sports events. On Sundays, WMSS carries a number of local church services, some of them are broadcast live. college station in York County, we offer a variety of alternative music and programming that is just not available from any other radio station in our area. We also serve as a training facility for all interested full or part-time York College students to learn the art of radio broadcasting. Our History WVYC (formerly WYCP, WMH and WMSR) was founded in the early seventies by a group of interested York College students and staff, who were willing to share their technical and programming expertise. We began programming on 640 AM from the lower level of the Student Union on November 18, 1972. In 1975 application was made to the FCC for an educational FM license at 88.1 MHz. WVYC signed on the air at 4:00 PM on November 18, 1976 with a live remote broadcast from Wolf Gymnasium, of the inauguration of York College president Dr. Robert V. Iosue. The first song was Don McLean’s, American Pie, played by Dave Davies. The first newscast was read by Mark Wormsbaker at 8 PM. More information can be found on the WVYC tribute page. Initially, from newly constructed studios located on the third floor of the Life Sciences Building, we broadcast from 4:00 PM until midnight. In the fall of 1986 after 2 & 1/2 cramped months in a temporary basement room, we moved into our present facilities on the third floor of the Iosue Student Union Building. WVYC FM began broadcasting mp3 audio streams on the Internet in the fall of 2001. Our first internet stream was at 4 PM on November 18, 2001, exactly 25 years after we first signed on the air. We received reception reports from every continent except Antarctica within the first hour. WVYC FM operates on a frequency of 88.1 FM. The radio station is and has always been fully student-managed. We operate as a division of the Dept of Communications and Writing. The Station Manager since 2013 has been Jeffrey Schiffman.
