in the Tate Student Center of the University of Georgia’s campus. Our transmitter is in the basementof Brumby Hall, and our tower, reaching into the sky at 200 feet, is on the roof of Brumby. We operate at an effective radiation of 26,000 watts, broadcasting at 90.5 MHz. Our signal reaches an average radius of 50 miles, reaching far into the mountains of North Carolina to the north, into South Carolina to the east, and the outer limits of Atlanta Floor Plan of 90.5FM to the west. WUOG is staffed, operated, and funded by UGA students. Supported mainly through student activity dollars, the radio station’s budget is supplemented by underwriting from local businesses, as well as donations from alumni marked to go to the station. Currently, 90.5FM is one of the largest college radio stations in the United States. Mission Statement The mission of WUOG is to provide the University of Georgia and the surrounding community an outlet that educates and entertains UGA student volunteers and listeners through music, news, public affairs, and sports. WUOG will provide an alternative to other media outlets in the community through programming that is diverse and unique, serving the public with music, news, public affairs, and sports of local and national interest. WUOG will also serve as a training ground for UGA students interested in broadcasting careers. Our Music Philosophy …takes up a whole page! Check it out. Our Staff WUOG employs a staff of over 200 volunteers, including over 100 DJs and a dozen executive board members. In order to work at WUOG you must be enrolled full-time in classes at UGA (or maintain half-time status while paying Student Activities Fees). We hold open meetings during the first few weeks of fall and spring semesters. Anyone meeting the above criteria may come and apply for a position at the station. People applying are expected to donate at least 1 to 2 hours a week working on any of our many Staffs. DJ Training Once you’ve worked at the station for at least one full semester, you can then apply for DJ training. After your department head approves the transfer, you begin the semester long proccess. Weekly meetings verse you in the legal, technical, and stylistic requirements for being a DJ. You also must sit-in with experienced DJs, and sucessfully complete an FCC policies exam. After completing the requirements for training, you are eligible for your own DJ shift. Don’t be surprised if your first shift at the station ends up being a late night/early morning one. Shifts are assigned each semester and preference depends on senority. There are currently over 200 volunteers employeed at 90.5FM, and a little less than half of those volunteers have been DJ-trained. Also note that while you are DJ training you must still report to your original staff and be active with that staff, as well as one semester after training. Otherwise you will not be allowed to apply for a DJ shift. If you’re interested in DJ training, or just joining our staff, check out ourTraining section. Hope to see you soon! Donating to WUOG If you love WUOG so much that you want to give us some money, you can now do so conveniently via the internet. Student Media Policy The student newspaper (The Red and Black) is the primary student publication on campus but is operated independently from the University. The student-run radio station (WUOG) operates under FCC guidelines, as well as under University guidelines outlined in the station policy manual. The Pandora yearbook is produced by students, who handle all editorial responsibilities. Institutional oversight is limited to fiscal matters. Students working with student media are expected to conduct themselves as prescribed by professional codes of ethics.
