Minnesota, was the first voice heard on KKOJ as he signed the station on the air at two minutes past noon on a hot summer afternoon with the temperature already well into the 90s. Kleven told listeners a few items about the new station. The station began its broadcast activity at slightly reduced power as some difficulties were encountered in the directional testing, but the FCC granted the station the authority to begin broadcasting at reduced power. Station manager Doug Johnson also greeted listeners eager for a daily news source in Jackson County, and Dave Maschoff gave the first newscast on the new station. Johnson has been with the station since its inception. Maschoff took a tour of duty in the Black Hills of South Dakota, but returned to his broadcasting roots in November of 1995. 1190 KKOJ AM has a "Hot Country" music format.
