democratic Namibian society. The ten Radio Stations of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation are truly an integral part of the Namibian Society. They have individually and collectively proven what a formidable force they are when it comes to information, entertainment and education. The radio services did not only proudly fulfilled their mandate as a Public Service Broadcasters, but have continued to do community service programming through broadcasting relevant programming on all radio stations, including Public Service Announcements, Current affairs Programmes, News, Sport, local and international music, Programme OB’s and sponsored OB’s amongst others. The NBC Radio Services is the most important source of information to the majority of citizens in Namibia. This applies especially to the rural population that does not readily have access to relevant information for making informed choices. The rate of illiteracy is approximately 40%, making radio one of the main sources of information. The NBC caters for information in many of the indigenous languages which are not as well represented in other media. As one of its main assets, NBC has an extremely high coverage of the population of Namibia, reaching 94 % of all Namibians by radio, over half through television. Through its great language diversity, NBC is also the only medium in Namibia which reaches out to all cultural minority groups in the country. Reaching 94% of Namibians in their respective languages demonstrated the power of radio and judging from the feedback of our listeners, radio is not only one of the most trusted media of information, but also the most popular. During their various road shows, personality shows and outside broadcast that served as out - reach programmes, the listeners came in big crowds to get a glimpse of their popular presenters and participate on the radio shows. The popularity of radio is certainly manifested in the income that they generate for the company. NBC Radio has a great potential as a vehicle for nation building and reconciliation. It contributes a great deal to language development and promotion of culture. As a unifying force Radio needs to keep its well respected credibility and visibility in the community. The staff members are enthusiastic about their work, hence the reason why they do so well despite some challenges. With the international cooperation and training Radio Management has organized as well as internal local support, Radio can only delivers its optimal best
